Who we are

We are a group of individuals with a passion for creating a better community for our seniors and adult children that experience disabilities.  We wanted answers to the following questions:

“How can we ensure that our children have the best quality of life that we can provide?”

“How can we provide seniors with peace of mind and companionship to benefit their emotional and physical health?”

“What will make our neighborhood a better place to live?”

We plan activities that foster connection between seniors and individuals with disabilities within the community and enjoy sharing information and education on a variety of related topics.

We began collaborating on a community designed to accommodate us whether we are able-bodied or disabled.  In senior cohousing we are planning ahead for when we might need a helpful neighbor to pick up our groceries if we are recovering from a hip replacement.  In a community supportive of adult children with disabilities, those same friendly neighbors might be enjoying a drum circle together.  And all could benefit from the features of universal design and the shared common spaces.

We are committed to taking action and are energized by the strength of creating a community that will help bring our common dream to reality.

Harwood Village, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote, support and develop independent living communities that embrace seniors and individuals with disabilities in ways that foster connection with each other and the greater community.  We attract funding from public and private foundations, granting organizations, individual donors, and will hold regular fundraising events. We do not fund our organization through the development projects we build—communities are built through a combination of donor funding, foundation funding, and buy-in of our neighbor-owners.
